The Maynard Conservation Commission requires help overseeing, maintaining, and sometimes policing its conservation lands. Maynard has nine “Showcase Parcels” of open space totaling 184.27 acres, all requiring on-going monitoring and care. A stewardship program was instituted to organize that effort.
• In July 2002, volunteers walked every parcel of Conservation Land in town and took notes (on file in the Conservation Office).
• In August 2002, a management plan was developed for every parcel of conservation land in town (a summary is shown below).
• In October 2002, Saturday Workdays (the third Saturday of every month from 9:00-11:00) were initiated to undertake large projects such as trail flagging and clearing.
• In April 2003 a “Lead Steward” and an “Assistant Steward” were assigned to each Showcase Parcel. They are responsible for taking quarterly walks to:
• Monitor their parcel, collect litter, maintain the trails, and paint trail blazes on trees, as needed (under direction of the Conservation Commission)
• General oversight to determine activities that require extra assistance (e.g., removal of big junk, construction of new trails, etc.)
• The Conservation Commission will be responsible for:
• Providing and archiving basic information, maps, etc.
• Initiating biennial communications with all Lead Stewards
• Installing boundary markers and trail head signs
• Providing assistance as needed (such as Saturday work crews for trail maintenance or junk removal, DPW large junk collection, etc.)
• Saturday workdays (the third Saturday of every month from 9:00-11:00), led by the Conservation Commission, will continue, to provide support for land management activities across town (including trail clearing, sign installation, etc.).
PLEASE: Call, email, or write to Judith Griggs, Conservation Adminstrator, if you are interested in assisting: 978-897-1029, Conscom@townofmaynard.net, or Conservation Commission, 195 Main St., Maynard, 01754.
