Glenwood Cemetery Pond, owned by the Town of Maynard, was built by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) in the mid-1930s. It was formerly part of the Yahn Farm.
There is an island in the pond and on the island is another pond. The outer pond was used as a skating rink and for local biology field trips. Now overgrown with cattails, lily pads, and a variety of grasses, the original design is no longer visible. The pond and adjacent cemetery area are lovely for walking, jogging, biking and birding. Watch for oak, pine and tamarack trees, sumac pokewood, blueberries, and wildflowers. The path along the east side is soggy in wet weather. The sugar maples have spectacular foliage in October. The paved roads of the cemetery are wheel-chair accessible.
Just off the paved paths, in the Glenwood Cemetery Woods, behind the DPW shed, you will find a vernal pool complex. Watch for spotted salamander and wood frog activity in the spring, when the pools are full. In summer some of the vernal pools disappear, in others the water level lowers dramatically. Some of the Maynard home school community are involved in identifying and certifying these pools as part of a Maynard Conservation Commission vernal pool identification initiative. |
