Ice House Landing includes an educational park, picnic area, and boat landing (a rehabilitated "brownfield"), as well as, 4 acres of relatively undisturbed woodland with some trails and more under construction. The parcel abuts the Assabet River Rail Trail corridor (a 12.5-mile pedestrian and bikeway) and is very close to the Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge.
It is a site rich in history and still holds old foundations of old ice houses. The central granite sculpture (and outdoor classroom) depicts the ice blocks that were harvest here throughout the early 1900s. Full-color interpretive signs describe the culture and natural history of the site. The boat landing provides the only public boat launch in Maynard. The site is used by walkers, cyclists, kayakers, and canoers who gain access to the site from the Assabet River Rail Trail corridor. |
