Much of the property along Rockland Avenue is owned by the town of Maynard's Board of Selectmen and Conservation Commission. Part of this area was formerly known as the Lalli Land, taken by the town in 1966 for unpaid taxes.
Most of the land is undeveloped woodland and wetland, with a network of trails to explore. One portion of the land is closed to pedestrian traffic as it contains Manynard's newest deep bedrock wells.
The trailhead halfway along Rockland Avenue leads to a short loop trail over a pine studded knoll and to a trail that crosses a parking area, passes a small pond, and goes through a wet woods to Silver Hill Road. Birdlife in this area is abundant.
The trailhead further along Rockland Avenue leads to several trails that pass a vernal pool, skirt another extensive wetland complex, and climb uphill and down.
The trail head at the far western end of Rockland Avenue is a across from an industrial property. The trail runs along an extensive wetland complex. A short distance along the trail forks. The right-hand fork leads to Stow, past a pond, and exits at Farm Road. The left-hand fork leads to Durant Pond, a scenic man-made pond with bass, pickerel and lily pads. |
