The theme is Maynard: Past, Present and Future.
The Maynard Select Board has approved using a Naylor Court wall in Maynard’s Cultural District for the new mural. This prominent site is a highly visible feature in the ongoing revitalization of this area. As we slowly emerge from the limitations placed on public gatherings by the events of the past year, it is projects such as this that will add to the enjoyment of our outdoor spaces here in town. As we celebrate our town’s 150th anniversary, a mural in a downtown public space offers us an opportunity to learn about the town’s past, participate in its present and look forward to our future through the lens of art.
Mural Curator Erik Hansen is spearheading this effort and the design selection will be a competition that focuses on Massachusetts artists. A jury comprised of representatives of the community, local artists and the Maynard Cultural Council will choose the winning design. This winning design will be announced later this spring.
Funding for this project is well underway. Funds have been granted by the Maynard Cultural District in support of Massachusetts COVID impacted artists. The Maynard Sesquicentennial Committee, the Maynard Community Enhancement Fund and several local citizens have also pledged contributions. Local artists have agreed to donate their labor and tools to prepare the wall for the application of the mural.
