Maynard Firefighters to Train in Swift Water Rescue

The Maynard Fire Department along with the Stow Fire Department will be training in Swift Water Rescue beginning on Monday October 17 and will also be conducting the training on Saturday October 29.  The training will take place in the Assabet River by the Mill Pond Office Building on Great Road on those days.

The motivation behind the training was the devastation that Hurricane Irene had caused in Western Massachusetts and Southern Vermont.  Maynard Firefighter Walter Latta, Jr had been deployed to the area with the Massachusetts Urban Search and Rescue Team and felt that if the Hurricane had tracked further to the east and made a direct hit on Maynard, we may have suffered a similar fate.  Many of the members of the Maynard Fire Department have trained in Water Rescue, but Swift Water Rescue is an entirely different environment.

Please feel free to stop by and watch the Department in action on one of those two days and check out our Facebook page for photos from the training next week.
